Southern Conference League Round Up – Round One

The newly-formed Southern Conference League kicked-off this weekend and there was certainly not a shortage of tries with over 200 points scored across five games, with plenty of players picking up hat-tricks.

In the West Division, the game between Swindon St George and Valley Cougars was called off, leaving just Cardiff Blue Dragons welcoming Torfaen Tigers in a Welsh Derby.

The Dragons will have wished they hadn’t been so welcoming as hat-tricks for Liam Silver and Wesley Cunliffe, along with 16 points from Ieuan-Rhys Beal gave the Tigers a 14-50 victory in the capital.

Duane Isles did manage to pick up a hat-trick of his own for Cardiff but it was in vain, in a heavy defeat. This results puts the Tigers on top of the West Division but will face tough competition in All Golds next weekend.

All Golds had a bye this weekend with an odd number of teams in the league.

In the East Division, three of the London based sides showed their class.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists welcomed North Herts Crusaders and put them to the sword in a 54-0 victory to go top after week one.

The writing was on the wall shortly after kick-off, as Nathan Mann scored after 30 seconds. Shane Richardson also put in a dominant display on his debut, bagging himself a try.

Colchester based Eastern Rhinos also travelled to London as they faced Wests Warriors.

The Warriors were not in the mood to fight for the win, as Jarred Bassett picked up a hat-trick in a 30-6 victory.

30-6 was also the full-time result at Pennine Way but this time it was not the home side who picked up the victory. Hemel Stags went down by 24 points to the London Chargers.

A Luke Tosvall brace, along with Phil Lyon’s try and 10 points from the boot was enough for the two points

The Stags consolation try was scored by Oliver Toms later in the game.

In the London Derby between South London Silverbacks and Brixton Bulls, it was a tight affair.

The Silverbacks made the home advantage count with a 24-16 win.

A Jake McCausland hat-trick was certainly the highlight of the afternoon for South London.

Bedford Tigers were the team with an opening round bye in the East Division and will be full of confidence after seeing their opponents North Herts Crusaders conceding 54 points.
